Single-cell RNA sequencing reveals dynamic paracrine control of cellular variation

A team of scientists at the Broad Institute and Fluidigm, led by Broad core member Aviv Regev, associate member Hongkun Park and our own Joe Shuga, analyzed the transcriptomes of more than 1,700 primary mouse bone-marrow-derived dendritic cells, revealing a subpopulation of "precocious" cells that expressed antiviral genes earlier in the immune process than others. The advanced response was triggered by paracrine signaling between the cells, highlighting the importance of cell-to-cell communication.
