Defining Renal Neoplastic Disease, One Cell at a Time: Mass Cytometry, a New Tool for the Study of Kidney Biology and Disease

Emerging and established methodologies now provide researchers with platforms for the detailed analysis of cellular characteristics at the single-cell level. Methods such as single-cell sequencing allow the cataloging of complex transcript information in individual cells. A new platform now provides the targeted analysis of multidimensional protein expression. The format is based on flow cytometry that uses mass spectrometry for identification of unique molecular tags (reporters). The method is called mass cytometry and it allows for the simultaneous determination of a series of targeted cellular parameters with single-cell resolution.
