Sox2, also known as SRY (sex-determining region Y)-box2, is a transcription factor that forms a trimeric complex with the homeobox transcription factors Oct4 and/or Nanog on DNA and controls the expression of a number of genes involved in embryonic development. Sox2 is critical for early embryogenesis and for embryonic stem cell pluripotency. Sox2 is also expressed not only in neural stem cells during embryonic development but also in differentiated cell types in the adult brain.
