The NKI-SAM-1 monoclonal antibody specifically recognizes CD49e, a type I transmembrane glycoprotein containing 2 disulfide-linked subunits of 135 kDa and 24 kDa. CD49e is also known as integrin α5 chain or VLA-5 α chain (VLA-5α). CD49e binds to CD29 to form the VLA-5 (integrin α5/β1) complex. The VLA-5 complex is a fibronectin receptor expressed on fibroblasts, endothelial cells, epithelial cells, platelets, thymocytes, T cells, and B cells. Several cell lines also express CD49e, including U937, K562, and some melanoma cell lines. It has been reported in the literature that CD49e mediates monocyte migration and is involved in the regulation of cell survival and apoptosis.
