CD54, also known as ICAM-1 (intercellular adhesion molecule-1), is an 85–110 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein that belongs to the immunoglobulin supergene family. CD54 is a ligand for Mac-1 (CD11b/CD18) and LFA-1 (CD11a/CD18). CD54 is expressed on macrophages, lymphocytes, dendritic cells, monocytes, granulocytes, and thymic stromal cells. It is also present on nonimmune cells such as hepatocytes, cardiomyocytes, and vascular smooth muscle cells. Additionally, it has been found that CD54 expression can be induced in vitro by proinflammatory cytokines such as IFN-gamma, IL-1, CCL2, and TNF-alpha.
